Key points

  • Reach = unique accounts; impressions = total views (can be higher).
  • Engagement rate = interactions ÷ reach (or followers) × 100.
  • Saves and shares signal lasting value more than likes.
  • Followers is a vanity metric; engagement rate is the scoreboard.

Instagram Insights throws a lot of numbers at you, and the words are easy to mix up. Here are clean definitions you can trust, plus which ones deserve your attention.

The core terms

MetricWhat it means
ReachUnique accounts that saw the content at least once

Engagement rateInteractions ÷ reach (or followers), shown as a %
SavesTimes people bookmarked the post to return to it

Which ones actually matter

Followers is the number everyone quotes and the algorithm cares about least. Engagement rate — and specifically saves and shares — tells Instagram your content had value worth keeping or passing on. If you optimise for one thing, optimise for content people save.

A quick benchmark

As a rough guide, a 1–3% engagement rate is healthy for most accounts, and higher on smaller, tight-knit audiences. If yours is far below that, the fix is content and relevance — not more followers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between reach and impressions on Instagram?

Reach counts the unique accounts that saw your content, while impressions counts the total number of times it was shown. Because one account can see a post several times, impressions is usually the larger number.

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?

Roughly 1–3% is healthy for most accounts, and smaller, tightly engaged audiences often score higher. It's calculated as interactions divided by reach (or followers), shown as a percentage.
